Choosing Denim w/ Ease.

When it comes to choosing denim, let's keep it more simple than complicated. I get it, trying on jeans can get overwhelming. So many fits, brands, fabric blends, and more. Most importantly, do they actually make us feel good when we slip them on?

Here's my 3 tips to focus on when searching for the denim for your dreams...

1. Know the Rise

The rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband, and it changes how a pair of jeans sits and looks on you. A high rise sits at or above the natural waist and defines the waist. A mid rise sits a few inches below the navel and works for most people. A low rise sits on the hips. Once you know which rise is most comfortable and flattering on you, you can skip everything else on the rack.

2. Know the Inseam

The inseam is the length from the crotch to the hem, and it's the most overlooked number in denim. It decides whether your jeans puddle over your shoes, hit at the ankle, or land at a cropped length. Measure a pair you already love, write down the inseam, and keep that number in your phone. You'll shop faster, and you'll know in advance how much tailoring a pair will need.

3. Try On as Many Pairs as Possible

Denim sizing is wildly inconsistent. Your size in one brand can be two sizes off in another, and the cut, fabric stretch, and wash all change the fit. Bring a stack of options into the fitting room, even the ones you doubt. Some of my clients' favorite jeans were pairs they almost left on the hanger. Sit, squat, and walk around in each pair, because jeans that look good standing still may not feel good all day.

*Styling Note on length! This is KEY! (your shoe choice matters!)

When it comes to length of denim, it really comes down to personal preference and style. But let me just say this, length make make or break your whole look and feel when it comes to flattering that body of yours. Take these notes into consideration when navigating the perfect length and how to style it well...

Let the shoes and the silhouette decide. Pair wide-leg or flared jeans with heels or platforms and let them drape/puddle, since the extra length elongates your leg line. Choose an ankle-grazing hem for sneakers, loafers, and boots you want to show off. Go cropped for sandals, ballet flats, or a slim, straight, or barrel leg that looks best with a little skin showing. If you're not sure, think about the shoe you'll wear most often and choose the length that works with it.

The Takeaway

Know your rise, know your inseam, and give yourself plenty of options in the fitting room. With those three habits, you can choose denim with confidence every time.
