The Polished Frame | Zoom STyle

We've all been there. Scurrying to get ready for that Zoom/Google call with frantic feels. All the while trying to create a seemingly polished look in that flatly lit rectangle — and that rectangle has its own rules of dress. Forget the full outfit; think in terms of color, frame, and finish. Here is my shorthand guide I give every client before their camera turns on.

1. Let color make the magic.

Webcams dull texture + tone, so bright/grounded colors — emerald, cobalt, burgundy, deep plum — read as intentional and rich. Save your bright whites as accent pieces only, as it gives a subtle glow under that camera light coming from your desktop. Most importantly, let those busy prints sit this one out; they shimmer and distract on lower-resolution channels.

2. Frame your face w/ what you wear.

A structured collar, a clean crew neck, or a soft cowl draws the eye upward, exactly where you want your audience online to focus on. Deep V-necks and delicate spaghetti straps tend to photograph as sloppy/unpolished in a headshot crop — save them for the evening, off-screen ;)

3. Layer with intention

A tailored blazer or a fine-knit cardigan laid over a simple base elevates your presence online instantly and can comes off the moment the call ends. ( I do this all the time!) One structured layer signals effort without ever looking like you tried too hard. Don't want to feel overly tailored and buttoned up? Simply drape the blazer or jacket over the shoulders.

4. Invest in the one accessory that reads on camera

Since the frame rarely moves below the collarbone, earrings carry more visual weight than almost anything else you're wearing. A considered pair — a sculptural stud, a fine gold hoop — finishes the look faster than a full outfit change ever could. Use of hands also shows engagement, so a statement bracelet or ring along with a manicured nail is always a good idea.

5. Dress fully, even off-frame

This has to be my #1 favorite tip of all. You will stand at some point — for a door, a delivery, a dropped pen. Real trousers and real shoes protect you from that one unscripted moment, and they change your posture on camera even when no one can see them. This includes shoes. I often slide on a fun heel or shoe I might otherwise not wear during the day just to feel that much more pulled together. When you dress well, you feel well. Your audience can feel that. Believe me.
