The Fine Art of Design

This year, National Second-Hand Shopping Day is August 25th, and I absolutely adore shopping second-hand. There's a wide variety of treasures just waiting to be found. Here are some of my tips and tricks for shopping second-hand... (see a list of a few of my fave shops below).

  1. The details matter. We frequently ignore a piece we adore and fail to examine it closely. Be sure to check for stains, tears, broken zippers, or poorly fitting seams. It's crucial to inspect a garment thoroughly from the inside out. No one wants to take home a damaged treasure to hang in their wardrobe.

  2. Familiarize yourself with brands. You don't have to be a fashion expert or stylist to recognize which brands represent quality and reputable standards. Do your research.

  3. When shopping second-hand, natural fabrics are ideal. Opt for breathable materials like cotton and linen. Silk, wool, and cashmere are also excellent choices. I particularly appreciate finding high-quality leather items, as they are durable and timeless.

  4. Familiarize yourself with the store owners. Understanding their story, the reasons behind their start, and what has sustained their business provides a good indication of the quality and care of the items in their shop. Develop personal connections and nurture these relationships for continuous magical discoveries to enhance your wardrobe ;)

  5. Above all, remain authentic to your personal style. It's easy to lose focus and choose items based on the concept rather than actual wearability. However, feel free to explore beyond your usual boundaries. Discovering unique pieces that genuinely bring you joy is incredibly rewarding.
