5 No-Fail Tips for Dressing Your Family to Match Your Unique Story
When it comes to photoshoots, especially with family photos...there are a lot of unpredictable pieces involved. Moods of those little humans you have created, weather, space and place, and all the things.
One thing you can absolutely nail, is how to ensure that photo pops and feels authentic to you and your family with what you wear. Here's my no-fail 5 go-to tips for approaching your ideal family photoshoot style.
TIP NO. 1: Think about WHO your family is.
Are you adventurous, playful, classic, luxe, nature lovers, sports lovers. How you live and what you are about is your family brand. Dress in a way that speaks to what your family values. It will come across in those photos.
TIP NO. 2: Identify your "Photo Hero"
What do you mean Renée? Often, it's the Mother. Let that person be the center of how you choose the rest of your looks. This 'Photo Hero' is the glue to the family dynamic, and is often the feature. For example, I love to put the 'Photo Hero' in a bolder print, texture, sparkle, anything that makes them pop. Use those colors on that person to navigate how to dress the rest of the family tribe. Think--what colors and fabrics will balance it all, and bring that story to life in a photo?
TIP NO. 3: If there was any time to be a little bolder in a photo, these moments are IT!
I don't mean to completely go off the wall and wear a costume, but more like...take an everyday look you might wear to the next level. Bolder jewel perhaps? Shoes that are a favorite but you never find a reason to wear. This goes for your partners, husbands, and kiddos too! Let them have fun with what they own.
TIP NO. 4: Don't force it...especially with the kiddos.
We often have this ideal about how a photo shoot look as a family/group. We have all seen it before. The kid is miserable wearing that buttoned up suit or good-girl dress. Honor who they are, and give them the opportunity to tell YOU what they want to wear. Working around their ideas and giving them freedom to be apart of the outfitting choice often leads to excitement for a photoshoot vs the typical dread and 'ugghhh, I don't want to take another photo' kind of meltdown.
TIP NO. 5: These are the moments! Simply be present and let go of any expectations.
Your smile should come from within, and believe me...you can see it thru that lens. Before that camera snaps, remember why you are grateful for the people in this photo. Smile. They are a part of your story. Your Style. Your heart. What a gift.
